Shylock

SHYLOCK is a French progressive rock band, birthed in the 1970’s, which became known for its instrumental richness and complexity, dark ambience, electric tension, and refined romanticism. Purely instrumental, the band built its audience with it’s energy and lyricism, which made the band a legend in the Prog world.

Gialorgues (1977), SHYLOCK’s first album, was recorded as a trio (guitar, drums and keyboards). It was an impressive debut. Over time the album has attained a cult status among progressive rock fans.

For its second album, SHYLOCK added a bass player and produced what many consider to be a masterpiece of symphonic progressive rock, Ile de Fièvre (1978).

Gialorgues and Ile de Fièvre were released on CBS/Sony Music. Both have been constantly reissued on Musea Records since the 1990’s. In 2014, SHYLOCK recorded new versions of its core repertoire, plus some unreleased material, on a self-produced album named Best Of. This was released in 2016 in Japan under the name La Somme des Parties. Musea recently reissued Gialorgues on a deluxe gatefold vinyl edition. Ile de
Fièvre
is scheduled to follow this summer.

The music is most often compared to King Crimson, but also Pulsar and Arachnoid. SHYLOCK’s influence can be felt in bands like Xaal, Tiemko, Minimum Vital and Änglagård

Thirty-three years after disbanding, SHYLOCK reformed in 2012 to perform the music worldwide again for people who had never seen them on stage. ...Still full of it's original energy, but tempered with an increased maturity.

THE WORD

"It was the only concert of the festival that kept me smiling during the whole show. I was really
happy that I could not describe it with words, but when I thought I had seen everything with Museo, PFM or Osanna, Shylock appeared and finished as my favorite act of the festival. I fell in love with their performance; first class instrumental music with a very eclectic sound, long compositions with clever changes in mood and tempo, challenging figures made by extraordinary musicians, who besides showing their skills, left their soul on stage. They transmitted a lot of things to me. Simply wonderful!"
- Guillermo Urdapilleta, THE ROCKTOLOGIST
BAJA PROG 2014

"Then comes the revelation of the festival. The fabulous come back of a legend of French prog rock from Nice on the French Riviera, I mean Shylock. ...The public's reaction was fantastic... The best moment of the festival certainly"
- ACID DRAGON 58
PROGSUD 2012

"From the opening... strains of the title track to last spacey moments of the epic 'Laocksetal,' this band maneuvers through some tricky symphonic territory and does so always with precision, ambition, and masterful craftsmanship. Finer examples of symphonic prog-rock from this era cannot be found."
- Dan Casey, EXPOSÉ

"…a landmark among the already richly diverse and defiantly unique French progressive music scene of the 1970s."
